Who is George Middleton?

In American History the name of George Middleton certainly carries a lot of both weight and authority. There was the Colonel George Middleton, an African American Revolutionary War Hero who was an ardent and staunch fighter for the civil rights of the African in America. That George Middleton was also known to be a skilled violinist that entertained the community with his evening rifts. A man of the community, was well known for his ability to bring a calming presence.

The George Middleton of the 18th Century was rumored to, “…possess an unconventional style of leadership, a commanding voice and an encompassing presence that motivated the allegiance of those connected to him”. That George Middleton is known most notably for the quote, “”Freedom is desirable, if not, would men sacrifice their time, their property and finally their lives in the pursuit of this?” The Revolutionary War Hero consistently questioned the narrative and construct of the time.

The George Middleton of the 21st Century

George Middleton, author of BLACK , also an accomplished musician with a number of published jazz albums challenges the construct of race in American society. His work questions the narrative of society, with the approach of racism as a mental health problem kept in place by the self imposed institution of racism,

Committed to the fields of Mental Health, Mentorship, and Youth, George Middleton has spent the last two decades in various positions, ranging from Student Life Counselor, Mentor, Music Instructor, and Mental Health Counselor. All have reinforced the importance and value an adult male’s role plays in child development.

Through unique and therapeutically creative methods involving music and arts, Mr. Middleton has developed a series of workshops, seminars, and instructional aids that are designed to connect, engage, and challenge today’s youth, adults, and families to reevaluate and reassess their thinking; leading to more effective behaviors.

All of his work is in support of an academy that he has created called Kuumba. It is an urban site providing free to low cost services to youth and families in the surrounding community. The services range from music lessons, behavioral workshops, and hosting for community events, to individual and family counseling..

As a musician; a jazz pianist, Mr. Middleton has taught privately, providing service to children, adolescents, adults, families, schools, and a variety of youth organizations. His music is available at

George Middleton is a Mental Health Counselor who holds a B.A. from the School of Music at Indiana University, an M.S.M. in Management from Indiana Wesleyan University, and an M.S. in Human Services from Capella University.
